In embryo transfer, a recipient cow acts as the surrogate, carrying the embryo in her uterus and giving birth. The embryo’s genetic material comes from a donor cow (and usually a sire), not from the recipient, so the recipient does not donate eggs or semen. The recipient’s role is to provide the gestational environment for the embryo to develop until birth.
